Decoding Wedding Day Timelines & Photography Coverage: How Much Do You Need?
Planning a wedding involves lots of exciting decisions, and one of the most important is choosing the right wedding photographer–the one honored to visually preserve and showcase your most cherished memories. But how do you know how much photography coverage you need? This ultimate guide will discuss how to mesh your wedding day timeline with your photography package. We’re here to help you understand the options, decide how much photography coverage you need, and make an informed decision.
From the pre-wedding preparations to the reception and everything in between, Nathan Phillips Weddings offers three main packages and coverage options to suit your needs (with the ability to tailor your package with add-on services). Understanding these options will ensure you capture your special day’s most extraordinary moments and treasured details.
Whether you’re looking for full-day coverage or a bit less for a micro wedding or elopement, this guide will walk you through which events to prioritize and how to make the most of your budget.

Importance of Wedding Photography Coverage
When it comes to your wedding, every moment tells a part of the story. From the intimate pre-wedding preparations to the grand reception, there are countless moments you’ll want to remember. Photographs have the power to transport you back to those cherished moments, allowing you to relive the emotions and joy you experienced on your wedding day. Investing in the ideal photography coverage ensures that none of these moments are missed and every detail is captured beautifully.
Your wedding photographs will become heirlooms you’ll treasure for generations, passed down through your family, telling the story of your love and commitment. Adequate wedding photography coverage will allow you to create a visual narrative of your wedding day, capturing not only the significant events but also the candid, fleeting moments that make your celebration unique.

Factors to Consider When Determining Photography Needs
Consider these factors to determine the perfect wedding photography coverage:
First, determine how long you want the photographer(s) to be present on your wedding day. Some couples prefer full-day coverage, starting from the early morning preparations and continuing until the dance floor clears at the end of the reception. Others may opt for partial coverage, focusing on specific events such as the ceremony and reception.
Another crucial factor to consider is your wedding day timeline. If you have a jam-packed schedule with multiple events, you need more extensive coverage to ensure we can capture every important moment. On the other hand, if you have a more relaxed and intimate celebration, you may require less coverage.
Additionally, consider the size of your guest list and the number of locations involved. If you’re hosting a large wedding with all your loved ones, you’ll want enough time to capture candid shots of your guests and all the intricate details—trust us; you’ll want comprehensive coverage of your epic celebration. Additionally, if your wedding takes place at multiple locations, such as a church ceremony followed by a reception at a different venue, you’ll also need to factor in travel time and coverage for both locations.

Full-Day Coverage vs. Partial Coverage
On that note, what is considered full-day coverage vs partial coverage? Full-day coverage includes 10-12 hours of shooting time, depending on your package and timeline. Typically, we’ll be there from hair & makeup until the grand exit, capturing every moment in between. This option allows for comprehensive documentation of your wedding day, ensuring that no detail goes unnoticed.
Full-day coverage offers the advantage of capturing not only the major events but also the small, meticulous details and candid moments that often occur during the quieter moments of the day. From the anticipation of getting ready to first looks and heartfelt reception speeches, these candid shots add depth and emotion to your wedding album.
On the other hand, partial coverage may be a suitable option if you have a limited budget or if you have a more condensed wedding schedule. With partial coverage, you can select specific events or timeframes to focus on, such as the ceremony, family portraits, and the first dance. This option lets you prioritize what is most important to you while still ensuring we capture critical moments.
Deciding between full-day coverage and partial coverage ultimately depends on your personal preferences, budget, and the overall flow of your wedding day. Consider the significance of different events and how important it is for you to have those moments documented.

Essential Shots to Include in Your Wedding Photography Coverage
No matter which coverage option you choose, certain traditional shots are generally included in your wedding photography coverage:
Getting Ready
The pre-wedding preparations are filled with emotion and anticipation, and you’ll want photographs that capture the excitement as you and your crew get ready for the big day. These shots often include the couple getting dressed, hair and makeup styling, and the sentimental gift exchange and first look.

Detail Shots
You didn’t put all that work into this day for nothing! All of those special details and nuances contain meaning and help to visually tell the story of your day. We want to highlight those for you so you can remember every intricate piece.

First Look
While a first look is not truly essential, we love it when couples opt for a first look because it helps maximize your time and get the most portraits possible because we can take couple, family, and wedding party portraits before the ceremony. If you are not doing a first look, we recommend an earlier ceremony time so that we still have light and time for portraits after the ceremony during cocktail hour. Please let us know if you’d like a sample wedding day timeline without the first look.

Alternatively, you can do a first look with your dad or influential family members for an extra special, heartfelt moment. (See example below.)

Ceremony
The ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. It’s where you exchange vows and make your commitment to each other. We will capture not only the significant moments, such as the exchange of rings and the first kiss but also the emotions on the faces of your loved ones and your celebratory reaction as you walk back down the aisle as newlyweds and pause for another romantic kiss.

Family, Wedding Party, & Group Portraits
Family and group portraits are a must-have in any wedding photography coverage. These images serve as a record of family and friends who surrounded you in love and support. Built into your wedding day timelines, we’ll guide you in posing and capturing these shots efficiently, ensuring that everyone is included.

Couple Portraits
The artists in us can’t help but fall in love with this part. Couple portraits are an opportunity to capture your connection and showcase your personalities in stunning and creative, art-forward compositions. These shots are often taken during a dedicated photo session, allowing you to step away from the crowd and create beautiful, intimate images. Imagine the sun setting behind you as you steal a quiet kiss before returning to the party.

Reception
It’s time to shake things up and break out your best (or wildest) moves! We’ll capture the atmosphere, the décor, and the candid moments that unfold during this extra fun part of your wedding day. From the first dance to the cake cutting and the open dance floor, these shots will help you relive the fun and excitement of your reception.

Tips for Maximizing Your Wedding Photography Coverage
To make the most of your wedding photography coverage, consider the following tips:
1. Communication
Communicate openly with your photographer about your vision, expectations, and any specific shots or moments you want to capture to make sure we’re both on the same page and that our team plans accordingly. Pinterest and inspiration boards or shot lists are always welcome; we’d love to use those as a jumping-off point for planning.
2. Draft a Wedding Day Timeline
We’ll work with you to create a detailed timeline for your wedding day so we can allocate enough time for each event and plan the coverage accordingly. (See wedding day timeline example.)

3. Scout Locations
If possible, visit your wedding venue(s) with your photographer before the big day (maybe during your engagement or bridal session) to identify potential photo locations and plan for any specific shots you have in mind.
4. Delegate
Assign a trusted friend, family member, or wedding coordinator to assist on the wedding day. This person can help gather and organize family members for group portraits, ensuring the process runs smoothly.
5. Be Present
On your wedding day, we take care of all the details so you can simply be present in the moment and enjoy every second. Trust your photographer to capture the memories while you immerse yourself in the joy and love surrounding you. (We promise to guide your poses when needed and let you know if anything is out of place. Relax, and enjoy your day.)
